Barra is to get double the number of daily flights all year under a new Scottish Government contract.

Two return trips per day will now be scheduled between Glasgow and Barra.

In addition, Sunday services will be extended to operate all year round.

The Scottish Government  has purchased two modern new 19-seater Twin Otter planes which can land on Barra’s beach runway.

The aircraft will be leased to the winner of a separate contract to operate flights between the island and Glasgow.

There are no longer air services between Barra and the rest of the Western Isles after councillors voted to abolish the link.

Tendering for the latest contract gets underway on April 7. It will be awarded by the end of July.

The contract period is expected to commence in October to coincide with the start of the winter timetable.

Transport minister Derek Mackay said: “The flights transport people, goods and services, playing a crucial role for service industries and ensuring that residents have access to specialist healthcare. Direct air links also enable visitors to reach the islands easily, boosting local tourism.

“We have listened to representatives of these communities to find out what we could do better and have built improved specifications into the next contract to make sure the flights are supporting people, businesses and tourism.
