Barra ferry to seek safe berth in Stornoway
23 January 2025
MV Isle of Lewis plans to take advantage of a weather window to seek shelter in Stornoway
harbour from potentially damaging winds of Storm Éowyn.
The Castlebay ferry is sailing today (Thursday) instead of Friday, setting course
for Oban and back.
An early 5.15am departure from Castlebay is planned to run ahead of today’s gale
with the aim of returning by mid-afternoon.
To avoid the vessel slamming against the pier at Castlebay during the wild storm
- which not only disturbs the crew’s sleep but risks causing damage to the hull -
the Isle of Lewis intends to steam north for a safe berth.
With conditions easing this evening for a spell before the storm arrives, the Lewis
gain shelter from the lee of the islands on her five hour voyage up the Minch
