Ferry taken out of service for hull repairs          27/5/14

The MV Lord of the Isles has been suddenly taken out of service after flaws or damage with her hull were discovered.

Vital repairs are required resulting in cancelled sailings.

Her hull were sidcovered The ferry is stuck in Oban and failed to sail for Barra and South Uist at lunchtime today (Tues).

Cal Mac said the 85-metre ship “is being taken out of service for essential hull repairs.”

 

Flaws in her steel structure were picked up as part of a routine inspection.

 

Cal Mac said: “Investigations are underway.”

 

The ship will not be allowed to carry passengers or undertake commercial sailings until the hull is up to standard.

 

An alternative late sailing for the stranded passengers to Lochboisdale only has been arranged by Cal Mac.

 

The call-in to Castlebay has been cancelled so Barra traffic has to stay onboard and divert via Eriskay and the Sound of Barra.

 

In addition, Wednesday morning’s mainland-bound sailings between Barra and Oban have been cancelled. Intending travellers are to catch the 1.40am departure out of Lochboisdale for a 7am mainland arrival.

 

The replacement sailing is due to depart Oban at 8pm tonight (Tues).

 

There may be additional sailings on the Barra - Eriskay route if needed, said Cal Mac.

 

Passengers wishing to use any additional crossings on the Barra - Eriskay route are advised to call either the Oban or Lochboisdale offices.
