CalMac has drawn up contingency plans for a ferry sharing timetable following MV Isle of Lewis’ unscheduled withdrawal from service.

No options to slot in a straight forward temporary replacement vessel are available as the shipping firm’s fleet is stretched to the limit.

The Castlebay vessel is out of action until further notice.

The ship is being sent to the River Clyde for repairs following a fault with her bow visor.

The Oban to Barra link was cancelled yesterday (Sunday) when the problem struck.

MV Isle of Mull which was pulled off her own Craignure service to cover South Uist when their designated ship was transferred to assist on the busy Islay route earlier this month, has now been switched onto a shared service with Barra until the Lewis returns.

Neither island will receive a full timetable.

CalMac said: “Following investigations into the technical issue with MV Isle of Lewis’ bow visor, we have identified damage to the port lower cleat.

“The vessel has now been removed from service and will locate to Greenock dock for further repairs.

“Preparation of a full and permanent repair plan is underway and once completed we will be able to define an estimated repair duration.”
