Calls to halt Barra conservation designations                1/2/12

Rhoda Grant, Labour MSP for the Highlands and Islands, has lodged a parlimentary motion to try and stop fishing grounds around Barra being ensared in conservation rules which could hit the local economy.

She said further information was needed over the possible socio-economic impact on local communities.

Ms Grant said that she shared the concerns regarding the Sound of Barra and East Mingulay Proposed Special Area of Conservation (pSAC) and called for answers from the Scottish Government and Scottish Natural Heritage.

SACs are selected on scientific basis to protect habitats and species that are rare, threatened or vulnerable.

Ms grant said that it seemed the failure to investigate alternative sites for designation suggests that there is little scientific justification surrounding the proposal for Barra.

Rhoda Grant said: “I am deeply concerned that little regard has been given to the possible effects on local economies should this site designation proceed without sound scientific evidence.

“I hope that the Scottish Government will listen to the people of the Western Isles and provide clear answers regarding these proposals.”
