Barra Children’s Centre gets £2,000 from STV appeal  16/5/14

Community project Barra Children’s Centre has received £2,000 from the STV Appeal.

Barra Children’s Centre is a community organisation that provides services and facilities for children up to 11 years, as well as parents and carers of pre-school children on Barra and Vatersay.

The facility is a thriving and unique central hub for children and their carers who would otherwise be at risk of isolation within the rural community.

The organisation runs parent and toddler drop-in sessions, Gaelic under-3’s play sessions, under 5’s active play sessions, ante-natal and health promotion workshops for young families in partnership with the health board, and summer holiday play schemes. It also runs a primary youth club which is attended by 86% of children aged 5-11 in the community.

The grant from STV Appeal will contribute to the employment costs of the organisation's development manager.

Elaine Stewart, of Barra Children's Centre, said: "We were overjoyed to hear the news of the award. It’s fantastic to think that our project made an impression on the trustees at the STV Appeal. Barra Children’s Centre is run by a committee of busy mums and it’s really important that we’re able to employ a manager for the project in order to continue the work that we do for children in our community."
