The RBS says it will honour its promise to retain the cash machine when the Barra branch closes in the summer.

Les Matheson, head of personal banking at RBS confused matters by writing to MSP Alasdair Allan saying the cash machine service will also stop.

“Regrettably, we won’t be retaining the ATM once the branch closes,” wrongly advised the bank executive.

However, the Royal Bank told Hebrides News the “letter was sent in error” and RBS will indeed be “retaining the ATM.”

The MSP was given inaccurate information and the misleading letter should never have been sent said a bank spokesman.

Barra will be left without a bank when RBS pulls out in July.

Senior bosses pledged to keep the machine to ensure 24-hour cash is available to islanders.
