Barra’s beach runway has been shortlisted as one of the world’s most stunning airport approaches in a competition which sees the small island airport go head to head with Russia’s Olympic gateway.

The airport is competing for top spot in a poll by PrivateFly.com against some of the world’s most iconic airports, including Amsterdam, Cape Town, Gibraltar, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro and Sochi, gateway to this year’s Winter Olympics.

The 37 strong shortlist is compiled by a panel of travel experts and includes famous cityscapes, stunning coastlines and beautiful mountain views.

Tim Smith, Regional Manager South for airport operator HIAL said: "Barra deserves its status as one of the most stunning and iconic airport approaches in the world. It attracts interest from passengers across the globe keen to experience its unique beach landing."

Votes are being cast at
