Barra airport is one of world’s top scenic           15/5/14

Barra airport has been named as having one of the most stunning approaches in the world.

According to experts at private jet booking network PrivateFly.com, the airport, which is situated on the wide beach of Traigh Mhor, has the third most spectacular approach anywhere in the world.

Barra beats spectacular airports such Los Angeles and even Rio De Janeiro in the list.

Isles SNP M  Angus MacNeil said: “Barra Airport is unique and it comes as no surprise to me that it has been named in the top three airport approaches. I regularly use Barra Airport and I will certainly never tire of the beautiful scenery.

“I know that people who visit Barra and who mostly come by ferry, watching the plane landing on the beach is a great attraction to their stay.

“With Lewis and Harris being named as Europe’s top island, Uist with the endless beaches and beautiful machair areas, this is another fantastic boost for our tourism industry and I warmly welcome this news.”

One voter said: “Where else in the world can you fly over majestic mountains, stunning coastline and turquoise seas before descending over an historic harbour castle and landing on a large silver sand beach? Totally stunning and totally unique. Nothing comes close."

Another fan enthused: "Aside from the beautiful sands on the beach runway at Traigh Mhor, Barra, the best thing for me is coming in to land and watching the Highland cattle grazing in the dunes beneath the Twin Otter - completely oblivious to the noise of the engines above them. It really is a sight to behold. Truly unique."

One enthralled visitor highlighted: "I found the journey through the beautiful scenery of Scotland was completed with the fabulous beach landing on a scenic island, something I have never experienced elsewhere in the world."
