Ballot boxes collected from the Butt to Barra      19/9/14

As the first ballot box of the Western Isles is opened, plans to transfer Barra and the Uists votes to Stornoway are on schedule.

Barra ballots have been taken by boat and road to Benbecula and a chartered plane has arrived in Benbecula from Oban.

There have been fears in the Western Isles throughout the day that fog may delay voting papers arriving in Stornoway.

Early indication at the referendum count is that the aircraft will be able to take-off tonight, with Barra and Uists ballot boxes expected at around 12.30am.

A Comhairle spokesman said: “It looks like it will go to plan but everything is changeable.

“The plane has arrived in Benbecula, Barra ballots have been taken to Benbecula, and we expect them to arrive in Stornoway around 12.30am or 12.40am.”
