A builders merchant that has traded in Stornoway since 1901 has been taken over by an industry leader.

Bain and Morrison of Lewis Street, has been acquired by Grafton Merchanting GB and will become part of its Buildbase branch network, recently named ‘Best National Builders Merchant’ in the industry awards.

Bain and Morrison is one of the oldest existing firms in the Western Isles and grew out of the booming economic era over a century ago when Stornoway was a major player in the herring fishing world.

John and Joan Hay, who run the island company and their team of seven other staff will continue with the business.

John will be branch manager and Joan will oversee administration.

The business will trade as Bain Morrison Buildbase with new signage and branch improvements planned.

The new name and a new parent company signals an important step for the business which is well-known to local tradesmen and the Stornoway community.

John Hay highlighted there are many advantages as part of a larger organisation such as increased buying power, greater stock range, access to sustainable “green’ products and upgrading equipment within the branch.

He added: “Buildbase is keen to retain and build on the local identity of the business.

“We will keep the original name and Buildbase values the knowledge and experience of staff, so customers will be dealing with the familiar faces who have served them well over the years.

“In this way Buildbase can guarantee continuity with customers and build on the high levels of customer service and goodwill that are important to the business.”
