►  Pupils’ face two mile slog in dark winter weather to school

Councillor hits out at axed school buses

The Council’s decision to stop running the school transport around Bakers’ Road in Laxdale is putting pupils in harms way, according to Cllr Roddie Mackay.

Youngsters have to cross to a bus shelter on the busy main road which is inadequate for the numbers involved so most have to stand at the roadside.

There is no pavement between the shelter and the road so children end up having to queue on the road, dodging passing traffic.

This is particularly hazardous in the dark and inclement winter month where visibility is poor, said Cllr Mackay.

He said: “The frustrating thing is that the situation is easily avoided by running the bus round the route.

" Along with fellow councillors in the ward we met with Head of Education Bernard Chisholm and he acknowledged that there was little or no cost in running the bus round the loop and that this would indeed help to keep our children safe.”
