The owners of the Crown and Caledonian Hotels in Stornoway have launched a new attempt to try and re-open both premises.

The hotels look set to remain shut over the islands’ tourist season as Punch Taverns is still trying to attract tenants.

The company will show detailed plans for a £300,000 refurbishment for each hotel at a business open day on June 5th in Stornoway.

An initial incoming investment around £32,000 is expected from any new tenant with annual rent ranging between £45,000 to £62,000.

Yearly profit could be up to £49,000, suggest Punch.

The Caledonian closed down in the middle of a busy season last summer in July while the Crown Hotel shut in January.

Under options for refurbishment, the present ground floor lounge bar of the Caledonian may be converted into a restaurant and coffee shop. In addition to tourists the hotel could market its meeting spaces as suitable for business and conference use.

The Crown Hotel could be renamed the Crown Inn with the public bar called the Harbour Bar showing TV sports and wi-fi provision.

The long disused door on Castle Street may be brought back into its use as an entrance to the first floor for access to the upstairs restaurant. The hotel decor would also be modernised.

A Punch Taverns spokesperson said the final design depends on which operator they go into partnership with.
