►  Children of the Atom seek “brave new world”

A new political party which hoped to fight the Western Isles seat in the general election has pulled out.

The Children of the Atom no longer proposes fielding a candidate in the islands.

The party had launched an online appeal to raise cash to fight the Western Isles contest.

According to its e-mails, the organisation national campaign HQ is based in Lewis. Party leader, Stirling McNeillie lives in the Point district of the island.

Following media inquiries, Meghan Brown, one of the party’s founders, e-mailed the link to a fundraising web page which displayed the slogan of “Help us win the Western Isles //GE2017.”

She said a manifesto “tailored for the Western Isles constituency” would be published on 1st May.

Potential donors were told their campaign funds are “seriously depleted and time to raise support is very short.”

“We would like to stand a Parliamentary candidate for election in the Western Isles, Scotland.

“We need to raise a minimum of £500 to pay election fees and raise significant additional funds for transport, campaign literature, and street advertising.

“Our candidate is up against established parties like the Scottish National Party.

“For us to put up a realistic challenge throughout the isles, we need to raise significant funds.”

However, the crowdfunding page was suddenly taken down on Monday.

Ms Brown said: “We are not contesting any seats in the UK and we are not publishing the manifesto for the foreseeable future.”

The party was set up on the run-up to the 2015 general election when its party leader, stood in Shrewsbury, winning only 83 votes. The 45-year-old did not undertake any active campaigning though a press release was issued.
