A Gaelic celebrity set to embark on a mammoth solo row from New York to Stornoway has won £5000 after entering Kukri Events’ national adventure scholarship competition.
Niall Iain Macdonald hopes to undertake the 3,400 mile voyage later this year. His attempt is a tough one as only a handful of people have ever attempted rowing solo across the North Atlantic and even less on the North America to Europe route.

Having already received backing from a number of corporate sponsors such as global oil and gas firm Canadian Natural Resources and legendary Scots band, Runrig, Niall Iain is now just £15,000 short of his funding goal of £60,000.
He said: “I am so grateful for the £5000 award from Kukri Events. It's a huge step closer for NY2SY and the start of my adventure.
“But for me, almost as important as the money, is the endorsement from Kukri’s experienced and inspirational judging panel, which included Mark Beaumont, Ben Shephard and Sarah Outen. The judges have been where all the finalists are now, they understand what we face and they believe in what we are doing and shown faith in each of us.
“After the disappointment of postponing the challenge in 2012 due to a lack of funding, I am now confident I will cross the Atlantic this year. However, I still need to find the final £15,000. I am actively looking for further sponsorship and donations, so please get in touch.”
