Injured fisherman airlifted in wild seas    26/2/14

Wild seas hampered the airlift of an injured fisherman off a trawler some 95 miles west of Lewis.

The first attempt to winch the 22-year-old Spanard off the pitching and rolling Ayr Queen was aborted due to a five metre high swell.

Stornoway coastguard helicopter returned to base while the vessel steamed towards land.

The call came in via an urgent radio message relayed through the Spanish maritime authorities around 2am on Monday morning.

The severe conditions forced the coastguard helicopter to delayed its mission for four hours.

A Stornoway coastguard spokesperson said they then “tried to lift the casualty off the boat but the five-metre high swell made it too dangerous.”

After the boat reached calmer waters, the aircraft went back out for a successful second attempt. The injured man was airlifted to hospital in Stornoway.
